Weight Loss Injection: What to Know Before Your First Dose
By Skin Consult Lahore | Sources checked . General information for adults, not a personal prescription.
You see the before-and-after photo. Someone mentions a weekly injection. Suddenly, weight loss sounds less like another exhausting restart and more like something that might finally be possible.
But the photo leaves out the questions that matter: Was the medicine right for that person? What were the side effects? And what happened when treatment stopped?
A weight loss injection can be a useful medical treatment for some people. It is not a shortcut around medical assessment. Before you compare brands or prices, here is how to separate the evidence from the sales pitch.
What is a weight loss injection?
A weight loss injection is a prescription medicine that can help eligible people manage overweight or obesity by reducing hunger and increasing feelings of fullness. Commonly discussed medicines include semaglutide, tirzepatide and liraglutide. They are used alongside nutrition, physical activity and ongoing medical care, not instead of them.
Semaglutide and liraglutide act on GLP-1 receptors, part of the body's appetite-regulating system. Tirzepatide acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. These medicines are not insulin, even though some are also used in diabetes treatment. NIDDK: Prescription medicines for weight management
Weight loss injection names: why the brand matters
The active ingredient, brand, formulation and approved use all matter. Two products containing the same ingredient are not automatically interchangeable.
| Medicine | Common brand examples | Usual injection frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Semaglutide | Wegovy; Ozempic is a diabetes brand | Weekly |
| Tirzepatide | Zepbound; Mounjaro indications vary by country | Weekly |
| Liraglutide | Saxenda | Daily |
These are international examples. A brand's approval abroad does not establish its current registration or weight-management indication in Pakistan. Ask your prescriber and pharmacist to check the exact product. This table is not a dosing guide. NIDDK: Prescription medicines for weight management; NHS: Tirzepatide safety information
How much weight can you lose with an injection?
The results can be meaningful, but the headline number needs its context.
In the 2021 STEP 1 trial, adults with overweight or obesity who did not have diabetes lost an average of 14.9% of their starting weight over 68 weeks with the studied semaglutide regimen, compared with 2.4% with placebo. Both groups received lifestyle support. STEP 1: Semaglutide trial (2021)
In the 2022 SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults without diabetes lost an average of 15.0% to 20.9% over 72 weeks across the studied tirzepatide doses, compared with 3.1% with placebo. SURMOUNT-1: Tirzepatide trial (2022)
These were separate studies, not a head-to-head comparison. The figures are averages from specific research programmes, not a prediction for your body or a recommendation to use a particular dose. Some participants stopped treatment because of adverse effects. Think in terms of a monitored, long-term plan, not a guaranteed number of kilograms in one month.
Who might be suitable for a weight loss injection?
A clinician looks at more than the number on the scales: weight-related health risks, previous approaches, current medicines, medical history and your goals all affect the decision. In commonly used adult prescribing frameworks, medicines may be considered at a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related condition. These are examples, not a universal rule or a self-prescribing test. NIDDK: Prescription medicines for weight management
Local guidance, ethnicity-related risk and the specific product's label also matter. Being eligible for an assessment does not guarantee a prescription. A consultation should leave room for another approach, including lifestyle support or specialist referral.
Tell the doctor about previous pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, severe digestive symptoms, diabetes medicines, kidney problems and any medicine allergy. Also disclose a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2; for example, the US Wegovy label lists these as contraindications. Weight loss injection side effects: what should you watch for?
Common effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and digestive discomfort. They may be more noticeable when treatment starts or the dose changes. Persistent symptoms deserve a conversation with the prescriber, not an assumption that feeling unwell means the medicine is working. NHS: Semaglutide safety information
Less common but important risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems. Low blood sugar is a particular concern when an injection is combined with certain diabetes medicines. NHS: Tirzepatide safety information
This is not a complete side-effect list. Read the leaflet for the exact medicine, and tell your medical team before surgery or sedation if you use one of these injections. NHS: Semaglutide safety information
Pregnancy, contraception and PCOS: discuss these before treatment
GLP-1 weight-management medicines should not be used during pregnancy. Discuss breastfeeding and pregnancy plans before starting. The stopping interval before trying to conceive depends on the medicine: UK safety guidance advises at least two months for semaglutide and one month for tirzepatide. Arrange this with your clinician, particularly if you also need diabetes treatment. MHRA: GLP-1 medicines, pregnancy and contraception
Tirzepatide can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill. UK guidance recommends switching to a non-oral method or adding a barrier method for four weeks after starting and for four weeks after each dose increase. Ask your prescriber for advice specific to your contraception. MHRA: GLP-1 medicines, pregnancy and contraception
If you have PCOS, bring your menstrual history, medicines and pregnancy goals to the appointment. Do not assume that having PCOS automatically makes an injection suitable. Our GP-led PCOS consultation can help you discuss next steps and whether specialist care is needed.
What happens when you stop weight loss injections?
This is the question worth asking before the first prescription.
Weight regain can occur after treatment ends. In a follow-up of STEP 1 participants, people regained about two-thirds of their previous weight loss within a year after semaglutide and the trial's lifestyle intervention were withdrawn. That finding does not mean everyone will have the same experience, but it shows why maintenance planning matters. STEP 1 extension: Weight regain after withdrawal (2022)
Ask how progress will be reviewed, what ongoing support involves and what the plan is if treatment becomes unaffordable or unsuitable. Avoid changing or stopping a prescribed medicine without discussing it with your clinician, especially if it is also treating diabetes. NHS: Semaglutide safety information
The useful question is not only, "Will I lose weight?" It is, "What will help me look after my health over time?"
Weight loss injection price in Pakistan: look beyond the pen
A price without an exact product name, strength, pack size and date is not a dependable comparison. Ask a licensed pharmacy for a current quote and ask the clinician what the full treatment plan may cost, including follow-up and any tests they consider necessary. We do not publish an unverified injection price or sell injections through this website.
Product authenticity matters just as much as price. DRAP's July 2023 alert warned about falsified GLP-1 medicines and risky online purchasing. It is a historical safety warning, not a current list of all approved brands. Check the exact product with a pharmacist and consult DRAP's current registration information. DRAP: Falsified GLP-1 product alert (July 2023); DRAP: Registered pharmaceutical products
Be cautious with social-media sellers, unlabelled vials, "research use" products and offers that bypass a prescription. The FDA has reported dosing errors and other safety concerns involving unapproved or compounded GLP-1 products. A claimed matching ingredient is not proof of equivalent quality. FDA: Concerns about unapproved GLP-1 products
Ask who supplies the medicine, how it has been stored, whether the packaging is intact and who you can contact about side effects. A discount is not useful if you cannot verify what you are receiving.
Seven questions to ask before starting treatment
- Am I a suitable candidate, and what alternatives should we consider?
- Which exact medicine are you considering, and why?
- How do my health history, current medicines and pregnancy plans affect the decision?
- What benefits are realistic for me, and how will we measure progress?
- Which side effects need advice, and which need urgent care?
- What will treatment and follow-up cost, and what happens if I need to stop?
- How can I verify the product and learn to use and store it correctly?
You do not need to arrive knowing which injection you want. Bring your questions, current medicines, previous reports and what you have already tried. A useful assessment starts with your health, not with a brand.
Frequently asked questions
Which weight loss injection is best?
There is no best choice for everyone. Results, side effects, medical history, affordability and the exact product's approved use all matter. A trial average cannot choose a medicine for you.
Is Ozempic the same as Wegovy?
Both contain semaglutide, but they are different branded products with different indications and dosing arrangements. Do not substitute one for the other yourself. Check the local product label with your prescriber. NHS: Semaglutide safety information
Can I buy a weight loss injection without a prescription?
Do not bypass medical assessment or use an unverified seller. These are prescription medicines; a genuine consultation and a licensed pharmacy are important safeguards. DRAP: Falsified GLP-1 product alert (July 2023)
Will an injection remove belly fat only?
The established medicines discussed here act on appetite and metabolic pathways. They are not a targeted belly-fat procedure. Be wary of promises that one injection will reshape a specific area. NHS: Tirzepatide safety information
Can I discuss injections in an online consultation?
You can discuss your history and questions online. The doctor may recommend examination, tests or specialist assessment before deciding on treatment. Booking does not guarantee a prescription.
Considering a weight loss injection in Lahore?
Start with a conversation about whether medication belongs in your care plan. Dr Sukaina Raza, MBBS, provides GP-led weight management consultations in Lahore, with specialist referral when appropriate. You can also explore healthy lifestyle support without choosing medication.
Clinic and online appointments last 30 minutes. The standard online consultation fee is PKR 1,500; this is a consultation fee, not the price of an injection. Clinic fees are confirmed before your visit. This is not a specialist endocrinology service or an injection sales service.
The best next step is not necessarily a prescription. It is an informed decision you can understand and discuss.
